Indian Council of Historical Research

Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) is an independent body established in 1972 under the Societies Registration Act. It is funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and Department of Higher Education. It is located in Delhi. ICHR is reconstituted every 3 years. It was last reconstituted in 2008 September, by the central government. The regional centres of ICHR are

Objectives of Indian Council of Historical Research

  • Bringing together the historians and provide them with a platform to exchange views.
  • Provide national direction to a scientific and objective writing on History and to also present and interpret history rationally.
  • To promote and facilitate research in the field of History, with special attention on neglected areas
  • To educe recognition and support from all the concerned in the field of research and ensure that the dissemination is done.
  • Provide scholarships to housewives and scholars interested in research
Among the major functions of ICHR, one is promoting and facilitating research through funding and granting aids for various research oriented programs to the research scholars. The grants that are awarded are mentioned below.

Indian Council of Historical Research

The two Journals published by the Indian Council of Historical Research are the Indian Historical Review (bi-annually) and Itihas (in Hindi). Further the council also grants publication subsidy for seminars, congress proceedings, books and journals.
