Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee popularly known as IIT Roorkee is situated in Roorkee, a small township in Uttarakhand, India. Established by the British in 1847 and originally known as Thomason College of Civil Engineering, this institute for Engineering and Technology was renamed as University of Roorkee in the year 1949. It was the 1st university of engineering of modern and independent India.

Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee is among the oldest institute of Technical Education in Asia. The campus of IIT Roorkee sprawls over 360 acres of Land. It also has a campus at Saharanpur. IIT Roorkee was recognized as an ‘institute of national importance on September21st, 2001. The status of the university was also changed to Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee from University of Roorkee. IIT Roorkee is also the youngest IIT prior to the establishment of the new IITs.

It runs 11 Under- Graduate programmes, 5 Integrated Dual Degree programmes in Polymer Science & Technology started in 2007-08, 3 Integrated M.Tech programmes, 3 integrated M.Sc programmes, 61 Post Graduate programmes and many Doctoral Programmes. Besides engineering programmes, the institute also offers 2 years MBA program which is residential. Several Ph.D. programmes in different disciplines are also offered by the Department of Management Studies. MCA programme is also offered by IIT Roorkee.

Teaching includes tutorials, lectures, practical, seminars, dissertations, projects, field & industrial training etc.
