Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar

Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar also known as IIT Ropar is among the 8 new IITs that have been established by the “Ministry of Human Resource Development” (MHRD), under Government of India. It has been set up to increase the reach and augment the quality and standard of technical education in India. This institute of higher education in Engineering and Technology aims at offering top quality technical education in a various disciplines of study that would in a way facilitate the spreading of knowledge matched with the latest developments in the industry.

IIT Ropar started functioning from its temporary campus at IIT Delhi on July 23rd, 2008. Then the Institute had 40 students in each of the subjects of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical engineering. IIT Delhi is also the mentor institute of IIT Ropar. At present the institute is operating from “Government Polytechnic College for Girls” in Ropar. For the future campus of the IIT Ropar, the ‘Government of Punjab’ has offered land of 500 acres at a beautiful location on the banks of the River Sutlej.

The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, sometimes also called by the name Indian Institute of Technology Punjab (IIT Punjab) follows such a curriculum that would provide education in engineering that is science based. This would help in producing top class engineer and scientists. The institute also helps in facilitating international knowledge attainment and also the simultaneous nurturing of such temperament to sustain a lifetime learning and investigation. The Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar follows the credit based system for evaluating academic performances.

IIT Ropar besides creating a healthy and strong environment for teaching is also keen in facilitating and supporting research in diverse disciplines. The motive behind this is to acquaint the students with the newest developments in different disciplines of study and also to enable them in pursuing their individual research interests. The Institute of Technology Ropar also aims at establishing a “Central Research Facility”.

The programme is divided into a period of 8 semesters and 40 students are admitted by the in every branch. The selection of the students to undergraduate course is made through “Joint Entrance Examination” (JEE), IIT. The Institute also provides doctoral programmse in different disciplines.
