Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

The Indira Gandhi National Open University came into existence in 1985 through the Indira Gandhi National Open University Act, 1985 (IGNOU Act). It is a National University which has its headquarters in Delhi.

The aims and the objectives of IGNOU are to impart higher education through open and distance mode of learning, mainly for the disadvantaged people of the society. Further it also aims at encouraging, coordinating and setting standards for open and distance learning in our country and also strengthening India’s human resources through education.

Presently IGNOU, the Open University, has more than two million students in our country, 35 other countries, 21 schools, 59 regional centres, 7 sub-regional centres, 52 overseas centres, 2300 study centres, 175 academic courses, 1100 certificate, degree and diploma courses etc. the 21 schools under IGNOU are as follows.

IGNOU has been recognized by UGC as a Central University. The Commonwealth of Learning has designated IGNOU as its 1st “Centre of Excellence for Distance Education”. The chancellor of this public university is Pratibha Patil and the Vice-Chancellor is V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai. Indira Gandhi Ntional Open University is also the “largest university” in the entire World.
